What is TSH? Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH is a hormone produced by a pituitary gland in response to the feedback from the hypothalamus gland (sent by thyrotropin). This TSH hormone influences the thyroid hormone production and release. most of the physicians suggest taking a thyroid test to observe if there are any changes to the normal TSH levels. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland. When it is said that the thyroid gland is under the control of the pituitary gland, it means that the thyroid gland function depends on the hormone released by the pituitary gland, which is nothing but the TSH. So, TSH is the influencer for T3 and T4.
Tsh blood tests are performed so that with the TSH test results we can estimate the level of thyroid hormones. this can be used to interpret the thyroid issues at hand. If the TSH levels are high than the normal TSH levels and TSH normal range, it signals that you have primary hypothyroidism. Whereas if the levels are lower than the normal TSH levels, then you are automatically diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid. Whatever the result or the outcome of this TSH blood test normal range might be, the treatment must start as soon as thyroid normal range or TSH normal value is varied from the normal lab values. And the thyroid hormone function is to regulate metabolism in our body.
Normal TSH Levels
When low TSH levels are found in the thyroid tests then it is an indicator of hyperthyroidism. Meanwhile, the high TSH levels or elevated TSH hormone in the thyroid test results are a sign of hypothyroidism. This simply deems the necessity of maintaining Normal TSH levels at all costs, if the purpose is to escape from the reigns of thyroid problems and thyroid disorders. To do so, we need to have some sort of idea and information on the normal TSH levels. That’s just not enough, you would also need to understand the different measurements for the normal TSH values and TSH normal ranges found in different laboratories across the world.
Usually, the normal TSH levels in blood for any healthy adult human being range between 0.4 – 4.0 mIU/L. The TSH blood levels normal range for the people with thyroid issues, and undergoing or takin some treatment for thyroid problems, is around the range of 0.5 and 2.0 mIU/L.
Previous Normal TSH Range
We are well aware of the importance of the knowledge of TSH normal levels during thyroid testing. This is so keen when you are trying to learn how to read blood test results of thyroid function test. Well, guess what some physicians contradict the others on the discussion of official normal TSH levels. So, in 2002 there is a new leaf in the book of thyroid TSH test.
As the normal TSH levels were changed. This change is the reason for many of the contradictions between many laboratories and how they treat their patients. Until 2002 the TSH normal range was between 0.5 to5, which is not so narrow when compared to the latter one. Read about the latter one below. Till 2002, if the TSH levels more than 5, the person is diagnosed with hypothyroidism. In the same line, if the TSH range is below 0.5, then the person is said to be suffering from hyperthyroidism.
Currently Used Normal TSH Level
TSH blood test levels normal after the new proclaimed form the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and a few other professional associations is 0.3 to 3. Although the range is narrow for the TSH thyroid, it is believed that it is the best-suited one. Doctors interpret the blood test tsh if the TSH level is above 3 as hypothyroidism. And on the contrary, the level below 0.3 is diagnosed as hyperthyroidism.
Conclusion: Whatever the lab you are going for blood tests to check thyroid function, your treatment depends on what the physician is referring to for comparing. If it is the old reference range, then you are likely to be treated for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, only when the range is either less than 0.5 or more than 5. If the lab follows the new system, then it is probable that you will be given the treatment for the respective thyroid problem, even when the range is between 0.3 to 0.5 or 3 to 5. As this TSH normal range is highly debated amongst the experts, it is safe to say that there is no such thing as recommended normal TSH levels.

The TSH levels normal range for a healthy human being and the TSH normal levels when affected by the thyroid problems like Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Normal TSH levels for Females
The normal TSH levels usually don’t vary with the gender. But they might be slightly odd or different for pregnant women and in children. For example, the normal TSH levels in children to teens must be in the TSH normal range as given below.
- Children between the age of 11 to 14 years the normal TSH levels normal range is 0.7 to 4.61. But the median is 2.1
- While the normal levels of TSH of adolescents from the age of 15 to 18 are 0.5 to 4.33 with Median normal of 1.7.
- But it generally speculated and expected that the normal thyroid levels tsh should not exceed 2.0.
Few points to Note
Subsequent findings confirmed that ethnicity, iodine intake, gender, age, and body mass index(BMI) can influence the normal reference range of serum TSH.
In reality, if the TSH test reveals low to normal TSH levels; then it is to be interpreted that the person is having a declined Body mass index (BMI). This also follows the symptoms like osteoporosis, brittle bones etc. (remember that it has got nothing to do with elevated thyroid levels or normal thyroid levels.) Just keep in mind that the TSH levels normal determine the situation your thyroid is in. So, don’t neglect to get it tested with a thyroid blood test just to be sure about the TSH range.
